What is a Sodium Light Bulb? A sodium-vapour lamp bulb is a gas discharge lamp that uses sodium to produce a light at a wavelength near 589 nm. Low sodium vapour lamp bulbs are a very efficient light source, however, the yellow light colour means that they are only suitable for outdoor lighting. What is the difference between a Mercury Lamp and a SON lamp? A Mercury vapour lamp is more involved and the light is white. Sodium vapour lamp bulbs produce a higher light output, approximately 90 lumens / watt and cannot be used in applications when colour rendering is important.
